66"  R/C Nautilus conversion

Last update: May 5, 2007

Custom Replicas offers a conversion of the 66" standard Nautilus kit hull, into an R/C type hull. Image 1 shows the second upper hull that is cast to create the removable upper lid. To do this effectively, the first upper hull is over cut to create the bottom portion that joins to the lower hull. The second upper hull is over cut against the opposite side of the dividing line to create the removable lid, ensuring a tight fit against the cut line itself.

The second image shows formation of the inner lip that acts as a support for the lid to attach to. Eight Allen type screws match up to aligned inserts that provide a secure metal system of threads, thus not relying on the fiberglass for security. These are standard 2-56 types.

Images 3 through 6 shows close-ups of the lid end joints and how we strive to get a custom fabricated tight fit. Each R/C conversion is individually adjusted to fit as tightly together as the seam work can be made.

Images 7 & 8 show close-ups of the salon window frame, which have 4 #00-80 type brass screws with inserts behind the hull wall, allowing for removal should it be needed during R/C construction or later servicing. The Irises are pre-installed to conform and fit the backside of the salon frames tightly. The whole surrounding seam that extends to the whole of the salon window bay is seamed together and re-riveted to ensure that all the detailing stays true

Images 9 -12 show the finished product with wheelhouse placed for overall effect. Each conversion in finished off with a coat of gray scratch filler primer to clean up all the seam work.
